Stax Records executive Al Bell felt that Carla Thomas, then in her mid-twenties, could become another Diana Ross and recruited Detroit producer Don Davis to come up with a cross between the Motown and Memphis sounds. Thomas’s honey-toned pipes and lilting turns of phrase proved ideally suited to the project, titled Memphis Queen, which yielded the Top Ten r&b hit "I Like What You’re Doing to Me." Marvell Thomas sat in the producer’s chair for most of the follow-up album, Love Means. . ., taking his sister even further down the pop path, but it was a Davis-produced track, the lovely "You’ve Got a Cushion to Fall On," that grabbed the bulk of the airplay.

Carla Thomas holds the distinction of being the first artist to cut a record at the Stax Records studio at 926 E. McLemore Avenue. Well, one of the first. She actually recorded that first song with her famous father, Rufus Thomas, at the age of 17.
